Collision Involving Ambulance, Pickup Truck Injures

December 14, 2017

According to WBTW News 13 , a collision between an ambulance and a pickup truck on SC 327 sent six people to the hospital with injuries. The accident happened on a Tuesday earlier this month at around 10:45 a.m. in Florence near E. Old Marion Highway.

South Carolina Highway Patrol determined the ambulance was heading north on SC 327, and the pickup truck was heading south on the same road. When the motorist in the pickup attempted to make a left turn onto E. Old Marion Highway, he struck the ambulance, injuring three people inside it.

Two emergency responders and the patient in transport were admitted to a local hospital, where they required treatment for non-life threatening injuries. According to responders, the 62-year-old driver of the pickup truck and his two passengers also went to the hospital for the treatment of injuries sustained in the collision. Police have charged the driver of the pickup truck with failure to yield.

What Happens When Car Accident Damages Exceed Insurance Coverage?

When it comes to liability insurance, most states have minimum coverage requirements. Although these requirements are usually fairly reasonable, motorists who choose to purchase only the minimum amount run the risk of exceeding their policy limits in the event of a collision, especially if multiple vehicles are involved or if more than one party sustains injuries.

If the damages following a multi-vehicle collision exceed the at-fault motorist’s insurance coverage, there are a few ways accident victims can pursue additional compensation. For example, if they have an active policy that covers crashes with uninsured and underinsured motorists (UM), they might file a claim with their own insurance provider.

Although auto insurance providers are required to offer UM coverage to their South Carolina customers, residents are not required to purchase it. UM coverage can prove to be incredibly valuable in scenarios like the one above, but if you do not have a policy in place, filing a claim with your own insurance provider is not going to yield positive results.

Fortunately, there is another way to pursue compensation from a motorist who does not have enough coverage to compensate you for all the damages you have incurred, and that is by filing a personal injury lawsuit. When you file a lawsuit directly against the liable party, you may be able to negotiate for a settlement that covers all the costs associated with treating your injuries.

Navigating complicated legal proceedings while recovering from serious injuries is challenging, though, which is why you should turn to Upstate Lawyer. Doug Churdar takes pride in helping people set their lives in order after serious injuries.
