Spinal Cord Injuries

What Is a Spinal Cord Injury?

Spinal cord injury commonly results from auto accidents and falls. An injury occurs when communication is blocked between the brain and the rest of the body. A spinal cord injury is characterized as “incomplete”, which may include a bruised spinal cord with varying effects on a person, or a “complete” injury, which results in a complete loss of function.

The higher the injury on the spinal cord, i.e. the closer to the head, the more dysfunction the injury will cause. Spinal cord injury may result in loss of bowel and/or bladder control, changes in sexual function, loss of sensation, and paralysis.
